Artist Notes: In 2007 I was moved to show the contrasts in the world: the modern sublime, where beauty and terror combine.  The Women is a montage based on press photographs of Iraqi women over the years 2006-2008. Not all the press photographers' names are known to me, but two are Mohammad Adnan and Wathiq Khuzaie. In this painting one is perhaps first caught by the sheer beauty of the women's silhouettes, but as the viewer moves to the front of the canvas the women's faces emerge as individuals, and finally they catch one's heart by their sheer anguish. The painting is acrylic on stretched canvas on heavy duty stretchers, with painted sides. A frame is not needed.
